Discover Bach’s Magnificat, part of the LACO Discover
Series. This lecture
concert focuses on one of the great masterpieces of choral
literature. The Magnificat, or Song of Mary, is
one of the eight most ancient Christian hymns, with text taken
directly from the Gospel of Luke. Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth,
who is pregnant with the future John the Baptist. After Mary greets
her, the child moves within Elizabeth’s womb. When Elizabeth praises
Mary for her faith, Mary sings what is now known as the
Magnificat in response– My soul magnifies [the
Lord]. Bach
composed his Magnificat, one of his major vocal works, for
Orchestra, five-part choir and soloists. Maestro Kahane cites his
love of choral works as one of the main reasons he chose to pursue a
conducting career. For this Discover concert, he focuses the
discussion on how Bach illustrates and illuminates the text of the
Magnificat. The evening culminates in a performance of the
full work featuring the Orchestra, soloists and the USC Thornton
Chamber Singers.

Los Angeles Master Chorale with
Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra
Grant Gershon,
Music Director, LAMC Martin Haselböck, Music Director, MABO
One of the greatest masterworks of all time,
Bach’s St. John Passion, is being performed for the first
time in Walt Disney Concert Hall. Following the highly acclaimed
St. Matthew Passion in 2010 – a purely musical
epiphany – you will now hear the earlier and more vivid and
dramatically intense St. John Passion on Palm
Sunday weekend. With 40 singers and period instruments in a
historically informed performance in the superb acoustics of Walt Disney
Concert Hall, this surely will be another standard-setting performance
of this pinnacle of the choral repertoire. Expecting this concert
to sell out early, LAMC added a second performance so more can experience
this masterpiece.
