J.S. Bach | Magnificat in D major, BWV 243

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
Jeffrey Kahane, conductor & tour guide

Guest Artists: Charlotte Dobbs, soprano; Zanaida Robles, soprano; Janelle DeStefano, mezzo-soprano; Ben Bliss, tenor; Daniel Armstrong, baritone; & USC Thornton Chamber Singers

Discover Bach?s Magnificat, part of the LACO Discover Series.  This lecture concert focuses on one of the great masterpieces of choral literature. The Magnificat, or Song of Mary, is one of the eight most ancient Christian hymns, with text taken directly from the Gospel of Luke. Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with the future John the Baptist. After Mary greets her, the child moves within Elizabeth?s womb. When Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith, Mary sings what is now known as the Magnificat in response? My soul magnifies [the Lord].  Bach composed his Magnificat, one of his major vocal works, for Orchestra, five-part choir and soloists. Maestro Kahane cites his love of choral works as one of the main reasons he chose to pursue a conducting career. For this Discover concert, he focuses the discussion on how Bach illustrates and illuminates the text of the Magnificat. The evening culminates in a performance of the full work featuring the Orchestra, soloists and the USC Thornton Chamber Singers.

Monteverdi | Vespers of 1610

Los Angeles Master Chorale
with Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra

Grant Gershon, Music Director, LAMC
Martin Haselböck, Music Director, MABO

Considered to be the most ambitious work of sacred music before J.S. Bach, the Vespers of 1610 will sparkle with forty pristine voices and Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra. Monteverdi’s intentions for the Vespers are unclear, but scholars suspect he was purposely padding his sacred music portfolio to land the job of Maestro di Cappella at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. And it worked! Since then, Monteverdi’s Vespers has become the most frequently performed and passionately loved choral work of the early Baroque era.

Bach | Rejoice! Bach Magnificat

Los Angeles Master Chorale
Grant Gershon, Music Director, LAMC

Trumpets herald the holiday season with two festive works by Baroque music’s most prominent composers! Bach’s Magnificat was given its debut on Christmas Eve in 1723. Eight years prior, Vivaldi composed his Gloria, which lay undiscovered in a pile of manuscripts until the 20th century when it was found, published and reintroduced to a world once again enchanted with his music. With joyous choruses and dancing rhythms, both works are favorites at Christmastime.  Dr. DeStefano will be heard as the mezzo soloist in the Vivaldi Gloria.

Adams | The Gospel According to the Other Mary

Los Angeles Philharmonic
Los Angeles Master Chorale
Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director, LA Philharmonic
Grant Gershon, Music Director, LAMC

On the eve of the Master Chorale's 50th Season, an international tour with the LA Philharmonic to London, Lucerne, Paris and New York in March 2013 creates an unprecedented opportunity to showcase LAMC on the world stage. The LA Philharmonic, London’s Barbican Center, Lucerne Easter Festival and Lincoln Center New York co-commissioned celebrated American composer John Adams to write a major work for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Similar in scope to Adams’ first oratorio El Niño, The Gospel According to the Other Mary completes the narrative by telling the story of Jesus’ Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection. The concert version premiered on May 31, 2012 by the LA Philharmonic and LA Master Chorale with Gustavo Dudamel conducting. The staged version created by Peter Sellars premieres at Walt Disney Concert Hall in March 2013 and then tours to Europe. Dr. DeStefano will be joining the tour as a member of the L.A. Master Chorale.
